Do Deer Eat Pumpkins?

Yes. Deer eat pumpkins, flesh and seeds both. On the Deer Streams cam a pumpkin is a treat set on the oats, and oats are the only feed that is there by default.

Why deer eat pumpkins

A pumpkin is an easy bite. It is soft, it is moist, and it is sweeter than a mouthful of twigs. A wild deer is not out searching for a pumpkin patch. It eats what the season puts in reach. When a pumpkin shows up where the deer already feed, they treat it the way they treat any soft extra. They nose it, break it open, and take what they want.

On this cam the trough is the place they already know. Oats are in it through the season. A pumpkin on that grain is a change of texture, and deer notice a change. One will often start it. Others wait at the edge, then move in when the first deer steps aside. You can watch a single pumpkin go from whole to a scraped shell over a few visits, or over one long night visit if the herd settles in.

They do not need the pumpkin. That is the useful part. The sweet bite is interesting. The oats are the reason they walked into the clearing.

How much pumpkin a deer eats

A pumpkin looks bigger than the meal inside it. Most of the weight is water. A deer can open one and eat a lot of the flesh in a single visit, then leave to chew the cud in the trees. Whitetails are ruminants. The first swallow is not the end of the meal. The chewing often finishes later, out of sight of the lens.

That visit is a snack on top of the grain, not a full day of food. Across a Deer Streams season the trough is stocked with about 14,000 pounds of oats. Pumpkins are not part of that number. A pumpkin, or a few of them, is a small pile next to the grain. Fawns eat from the same trough as the does, so a young deer may take a bite too. There is no separate serving and no dinner bell.

If the pumpkin is gone, the herd goes back to the oats. They eat until the interesting part is done, or until another deer wants the spot.

Is pumpkin a good treat on the cam

On this cam, pumpkin is a treat beside oats, not the meal itself. The default feed is oats. Pumpkin is added when viewers buy a treat for the herd. Folks do that through Buy Me a Coffee or a Super Chat on the live stream. Those treats are bought. They are not part of the everyday fill, and they are not waiting in the trough unless someone has paid for them.

This page will not tell you to set pumpkins out at home. The trough is private, the herd is wild, and the feed is planned for a five-month season, November 1 to March 31, in Canada. A managed trough is not the same thing as a backyard pile. If you want to see a pumpkin on the cam, the way to do it is to buy a treat, then watch.

Fresh pumpkin is what belongs on the grain. The cam is not a place for a forgotten pumpkin from the back step. The treat is chosen, set on the oats, and filmed. Then it is gone, and the default feed is still oats the next time the herd walks in.

What you will notice

Deer often start at a cut face, where the flesh is already open. Seeds get eaten along with the stringy middle. The rind is tougher, so it is usually last, and sometimes it is left. A deer may lift the pumpkin, drop it, and try another angle. Then it goes back to the oats, because the oats are still the point of the visit.

Apples, carrots, and squash work the same way. They sit on top. They do not replace the grain. Carrots have their own answer, and the winter page explains what the herd leans on when the ground is hard. The overview of the whole trough is on the what deer eat page.

Frequently asked questions

Do deer eat pumpkin seeds?

Yes. The seeds go with the soft middle. Deer do not pick them out one by one, but they eat them while they work through the pumpkin.

Do deer eat the pumpkin rind?

Sometimes, and usually last. The flesh is the easy part. The shell is tougher, so pieces of rind can still be in the trough after the inside is gone.

Are pumpkins the main food on the cam?

No. Oats are the default feed. Pumpkin is a treat on top, and it is not in the trough every day.

Who pays for the pumpkin treats?

Viewers do. A treat is bought through Buy Me a Coffee or a Super Chat. Oats are fed by default. The pumpkin is extra.

Can I drop a pumpkin off at the cam?

No. The trough is private. If you want the herd to have a pumpkin, buy a treat through Buy Me a Coffee or send a Super Chat, then watch it on the stream.
